A couple who say their relaxing family holiday in Egypt was ruined by illness are taking legal action.

Michelle Ford and Anthony Staunton, of Balderton, booked a holiday to Tiran Island Resort, Sharm el-Sheikh, in September. But, along with seven other holidaymakers, they say they came down with stomach cramps, diarrhoea, sickness and fever. The couple have instructed lawyers to investigate conditions at the resort and hope to find out what caused them to fall ill and if anything could have been done to prevent it.
The claims by the affected holidaymakers include rats being seen at the hotel; kitchen staff allegedly wiping their faces with a cloth that was then used to wipe work surfaces; lukewarm food being served; and sewage-like smells around the resort.

Anthony and Michelle booked through www.verycheapholidays.co.uk — part of the Freedom Travel Group.

Anthony said: “We hoped for a relaxing getaway in the sun, but instead the holiday was a disaster. “With Michelle and I falling ill, we had to spend more time than we would normally cooped up in the hotel room.”

‘We’re sorry to hear about Michelle and Anthony’s experience’

The Freedom Travel Group, which is a consortia for independent travel businesses, said it became aware of the legal action in November.
A spokesman said its members were backed by the Air Travel Organiser’s Licence (ATOL) which meant all holidaymakers could travel with confidence. It said Freedom had a duty of care to address any concerns customers might have. “The Freedom Travel Group takes health and hygiene issues seriously,” said the spokesman.

“We work closely with our partners to ensure the holidays we offer operate to the highest health and hygiene standards, so we’re sorry to hear about Michelle and Anthony’s experience in Egypt in September with verycheapholidays.

“We can confirm that we have recently been contacted by a solicitor acting on behalf of the party.“We are now in the process of liaising directly with their legal representatives.“We are unable to comment further at this time.”
