Cryptosporidium is primarily a pathogen that causesboth respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses (cryptosporidiosis). The gastrointestinal illness primarily involves a watery diarrhea.
We see this parasite more frequently in cases where clients have complained of smell of sewage around the hotel. This smell often comes as a result of untreated sewage waste being used to fertilise the hotel greenery.
This process of recycling waste water saves money for the hotel, due to water-treatment costs but leads to a huge increase in the reports of sickness, diarrhoea and reported outbreaks of cryptosporidium.
This is a parasite that lives in, or on, another organism. Infection can occur in humans and animals and is easily spread through contact with an infected person.
The Cryptosporidiumproduce spore that can survive for long periods of time outside a host notably in anaerobic conditions (such as in watery environments). It can also resist many common disinfectants, notably chlorine-based disinfectants that are used in pools.
