Alexandra Lees, said that she and her family had their once in a life-time holiday, “totally ruined by filthy conditions at the Tropicana Sea Splash Hotel in Sharm El-Sheikh”.
During their stay at the hotel the family were struck with stomach cramps, sickness, diarrhoea and a fever which left them largely confined to their hotel rooms.
The family are among 73 other British holidaymakers who were compensated a total of £350,000 from First Choice Holidays and Flights at Birmingham County Court this month due to poor conditions in the resort in 2012. .
Miss Lees was awarded a total of £12,000. She said she had to be put on medication for diarrhoea after returning from the trip, while her father James Hammond was taken ill with pleurisy. Mr Hammond was awarded a total of £4,000. Miss Lee’s Brother Michael, aged 19, received £1,900, her step-sister Molly, 13, was awarded £1,890 and her stepmother Sharon, 45, received £1,800.
During the stay, it has been reported that food was served undercooked. Raw sewage was seen coming up through the drains near to the children’s pool, cross-contamination of raw and cooked meats was witnessed by guests and uneaten food from previous meals was recycled.
The court heard that many of the guests from the resort suffered from symptoms including sickness and diarrhoea, leaving a number of them needing medical treatment. Some of the guests suffered from serious infections, including Salmonella and Cryptosporidium.
The 73 holidaymakers stayed at the ‘luxury’ four-star resort between May 19 and August 23, 2012. They were each awarded compensation from First Choice, despite the tour operator failing to either admit or deny liability.
To make a claim under The Package Travel, Package Holidays and Package Tours Regulations 1992, you have to be able to prove the tour operator showed a lack of reasonable care and skill in the supply of your holiday. The regulations say the expected standard of skill and care will be considered in relation to the reasonable standards in the country where the accident happened.
Solicitor representing the family, said: “We have received dozens of complaints from holidaymakers who stayed at the Tropicana Sea Beach Splash Resort during 2012 and in seeking to secure them justice for their illnesses and ruined holidays we were able to obtain expert evidence which was supportive to their claims, despite the refusal by First Choice to neither admit or deny liability.
“There were guests that were diagnosed with salmonella food poisoning and cryptosporidium, and a number of the guests that suffered illness suffered from symptoms including stomach cramps, diarrhoea, vomiting and lethargy.
“These illnesses have had a debilitating long term impact on the health of some of our clients.”
First Choice no longer advertised the hotel as part of its packaged holiday’s in Sharm El-Sheikh, which has since changed name.
