Romantic Thomas Cook holiday to Turkey turned into a nightmare for couple after diarrhoea bug left them in hospital
Couple’s first trip abroad ended in horror case of stomach bug that led to two hospital visits and six out of 10 days in hospital
A ROMANTIC first holiday abroad went catastrophically wrong for a young couple – after they BOTH ended up in hospital with a diarrhoea bug.
Gracia Isherwood was admitted to hospital TWICE and spent six days of a 10 day holiday in hospital with acute gastroenteritis.
The couple went on an all-inclusive trip to Yel Holiday Resort in Turkey, pictured
Gracia, 23, from Stockport, Cheshire, says: “I was on my first holiday abroad with my boyfriend and so it was supposed to be romantic and exciting.
“Instead, I found myself dashing to the toilet.Gracia says: “It was our first holiday together so we wanted it to be really special.“We’d saved all year to afford it and we were really excited.” But when they arrived, the couple were instantly underwhelmed.
Gracia says: “The hotel was okay, but not as nice as we’d hoped. But the buffet was the real disappointment.
Gracia told how the holiday horror ‘could have been the end’ of their relationship
“The food was lukewarm and it was mainly soggy chicken nuggets and burgers. There were lots of flies and it was 40 degrees.
“We ate there because there were no other options, but I didn’t like the food at all.”
Three days in, Gracia was relaxing on a sun-bed when she became violently ill.
She was hooked up to a drip and allowed home later that night.
Kyle on the first day of the holiday … the pair were immediately disappointed by the hotel upon their arrival, and things soon went from bad to worse
The next morning, they were both taken to hospital by ambulance.Gracia fell unconscious before her arrival. She says: “When I came round again, I was very scared. I was in so much pain and I couldn’t even sip water without being sick.“Luckily, Kyle was in the same room with me.But we had no way of contacting our family back home to let them know what had happened.”
Gracia had scans which revealed she had a gut infection, and doctors were concerned that her appendix had become inflamed as a result.
She had a cocktail of drugs and drips to treat severe diarrhoea, vomiting and stomach cramps.
Gracia, 23, went to hospital two times over the course of the trip, spending six days out of the 10-day holiday under medical supervision
“The holiday rep came to see us and she let our families know what was happening.
“My mum wanted to fly out, but I kept insisting that I was going home instead. I was in floods of tears.”
Kyle was discharged the following day, but Gracia remained in hospital for six days until she was due to fly home.
She says: “I really wasn’t well enough to fly, but I put a brave face on and told the doctors I was feeling much better.
“We literally went from the hospital to the airport.
“I was sick in the airport, sick on the plane, sick on the car journey home. But I was determined to get home.”
Gracia was seen by her own GP who confirmed she had been given the correct treatment and medication for acute gastroenteritis in Turkey.
She had three weeks off work whilst she took antibiotics, painkillers, and anti-sickness drugs.
She says: “I took seven pills three or four times a day.
“The only small bonus was that I lost over a stone in weight!”
It was several months before her stomach returned to normal and even now she says she is very careful about what she eats.
She says: “The good thing is that Kyle and I are still together.
“I think our holiday horror could have been the end of our relationship – instead it brought us closer together.
Gracia says the food the pair ate at the hotel caused a gut infection which led to three weeks off work once she made it home
“However I hope that’s the first and last time Kyle sees me in such a state.”
She and Kyle launched a legal action against their holiday company Thomas Cook and were awarded compensation of atleast twice the cost of their holiday.
